Maternity Leave In Singapore

If you are a working mother, you are entitled to paid maternity leave after the birth of your child. Find out about the benefits, coverage and rights under different scenarios.

  • As a working mother, you will be entitled to either 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave or 12 weeks of maternity leave, depending on whether your child is a Singapore citizen and other criteria.
  • Your maternity leave entitlements may be affected in different situations, such as birth of twins, birth to a single mother or premature birth.
  • If you have worked for your employer for at least 3 months, you have maternity protection against retrenchment and dismissal without sufficient cause during pregnancy. You and your employer also have certain obligations during maternity leave.
  • You can file an appeal against your employer if you have a dispute over maternity leave or feel that you have been unfairly dismissed.
  • You have the option of taking your maternity leave either in one block or spread out over 12 months. You should work out an arrangement with your employer that suits both your needs.
  • Use the maternity leave calculator to plan your maternity leave dates.
  • Some parents presently do not qualify for the benefits, as they may be on multiple short-term contracts or their employment contracts may have expired before the birth or adoption of their child.
  • These cash benefits under the new law are similar to the current government-paid maternity benefit for working mothers, but with cash given in lieu of the government-paid share of leave.
